USS Newport News CA-148 off North Vietnam
( image from photo by John Glass October 1967 )

October 1, 1972, USS Newport News CA-148 lost twenty sailors in an explosion in Turret 2.
September 10, 1972, USS Newport News CA-148 lost a sailor over the side.
July 4, 1972, USS Newport News CA-148 lost a sailor in an accident at sea.
June 17, 1968, HMAS Hobart DDG-39 lost two sailors to friendly fire.

When I originally prepared the list of shipmates names to be read, I omitted the name of one shipmate lost in a separate incident.

SK3 Stephen Michael Brumfield was lost in a in forklift accident at sea on July 4, 1972.

I am deeply sorry for the omission. To my mind, the wreath was as much for him as our other shipmates and I have added his name to this website as if I had not made the mistake.

For reasons of having an accurate history, the original list, as actually read on January 25, 2004, is preserved below.
